I have an idea for an ebook - is it necessary to purchase ebook creation software, or can I just send an MS Word document? What's the best way to create and market an ebook?

You MUST convert your manuscript into an eBook format. Most eBook distributors (Amazon, Mobipocket, etc.) accept MS Word manuscripts BEFORE they are converted. Since your Q is 2 years old, you've most likely figured it out by now. Oh! PS: Graphic, tables and the like don't convert without a ton of work so stick to just text.
