How to Use Meditation to Focus the Mind?
How, what, when, where, and anything else you'd like to share, such as other reasons for meditation. :-)

I find a good technique for meditation is to sit comfortably in a quiet place where you will not be disturbed, with eyes closed, and concentrate on your breathing. As soon as your mind starts to wonder, focus on your breathing again paying specific attention to the point when you breathe in , then breathe out. With practice you will find it easier each time. Try to do this 30 min to 1 hour each day. The benefits of simply de-stressing are well worth every minute, but you will also find with time that it creates openings for creativity and answers you are searching for because you learn to be more aware. Meditation teaches us to recognize solutions that we attracted to ourselves - solutions that may have been there all along but in our hurried lives we often fail to recognize them as such.

In my experience meditation actually quiets the mind. The constant chatter we normally have going on gradually subsides and the result of this is clearer focus.
To think of an analogy, think of a computer with loads of software loaded onto it. It takes at least twice as long for it to process information and is rather slow. Then when you remove most of the software and give it a defrag, it becomes a lot quicker and more responsive. It can focus on the task at hand because it doesn't have to wade through loads of irrelevant informtation.
I think this is how meditation focuses the mind - it clears out the junk.

I read a good hub about meditation. It outlines some good techniques...check it out!

The only thing you need to do is meditate, this will focus your mind.
Meditation is not a belief system and it is not anything to do with religion it is quite scientific.
A very simple formal technique is to take 10 minutes with your phone off, TV, radio and music off and sit somewhere comfortable on your own. As you relax in the silence begin to put your attention on your breath as you breath normally. Your attention will go off your breath and when it does and your mind begins to distract you just gently pull your attention back to your breath. Carry on doing this for 10 minutes each day.
It is not in the moments that you are meditating that you feel the focus but afterwards during your life. This method of beginning to get mastery of the mind is what is important and when you consciously put your attention on the breath you are stopping the mind from having power over you. You are not the mind but are a deeper prescence that lies deep within, by meditating you are building the strength of this deeper part - your higher self which will give you peace, wisdom and strength in your life. Meditating is not a time for thinking. Focused thinking will come after meditating.
Within a month of using this method your life and your attitude and mastery will have changed drastically.

No one can focus the mind because the mind is focussing everthing it takes the shape of what ever object we see. Mind can be tranined to focus the self. by constantly watching the origin of the mind, mind will subside.

To focus the mind on a single point I use anapana, or meditation using the breath as focus of attention.
It helps to put the mind on the present moment. Breathing is a natural process and has the particular characteristic that you can do it consciously or unconsciously.
Having this special characteristic it joins the body and the mind, so when you pay attention to it and just let it be you start observing how your body and mind are connected.
In this connection the mind concentrate and the more you do it, the more concentration you get.

Mediation is a way of talking to yourself and instructing yourself.
You somewhat become two people.
One side of you talking to the other to build the whole.
