I've lived Normandy for 59 years. My Dad was a Quartermaster Second Class on LCT 544 that carried beach engineers and infantry scouts from the Big Red One into Easy Red. I've been to Normandy several times over the years. The first time in 1964 when My Dad, brother and I stopped there during the 20th anniversary of the invasion. My brothers and I took him to the 50th anniversary. My Dad and all other veterans of the day were treated as heroes as they all are. My Dad took some photographs that day. My highlight was listening to some terrific oral histories as my Dad passed copies of his pictures along to other veterans, one Jack Boardman Baker Co. 741st Tank Battalion looked at the tanks on the beach and pointed, "That's my tank!"
D-Day is and remains one of the great stories of history; the first steps that freed a continent.
