Why are rat thumbs atrophied !??
Rat have four fingers and a little lump at the place of the thumb. WHY??? They are skilled animals and use there fingers very well. If they did have opposed fingers, I bet they would be building houses. Been a while searching, found nothing w/ google.

Yeah, what xaq said. And, then they will be ready to take over the earth after humans self-destruct.

Hi there, good question! One theory (not sure about it though) is that because off the speed they eat it could easily be bitten! Not sure about that and sounds a little hmmm to me! One more reliable reason is that because rats use all four feet to run, the addition of a thumb may lead to complications as it may break this added digit whilst scampering. However, over the years I have been keeping rats and guiding true healthy lines for breaders, I have noticed this thumb lump getting ever so slightly bigger.! Evolution becasue of their status as kept pets. I'l leave you to decide that one!
Take care

There is no "reason" that's just how it is. They are still evolving, the future could see opposable-thumbed rats.
