I am not clear with the answer to the question "Is speaking in tongues really a higher step in ones
my reason for asking this question is because my pastor said"it is better to prophecy than to speak in tongues that no one will hear. A brother said "speaking in tongues is a higher step ones spiritual life ".So this has just let me confuse. Please help me....

Speaking in tongues is the evidence that you have been baptized with the Holy Spirit.It's indeed a higher step to your spiritual growth and development.You can not prophecy until you are baptized in the Holy Spirit.Prophecy is one of the gift of the Spirit.Read Acts 2:4,1Cor.12,14 for better understanding.

Speaking in tongues is a form of ecstatic expression, just like dancing or singing. It is something to be done, not heard.
