How to tell if a maple tree is dead or alive?
We have a maple tree in a pot that was neglected when our drip system broke. The leaves are all dry, but the trunk is still green. I'd like to know how I can tell if the maple tree is dead or alive. It would also be helpful to know tips to bring it back to good health if possible.

Scratch the stem with your finger nail. It should be green under. Maple does better in the ground.
What kind of maple?

I would try watering and caring for the tree as normal. If you see no marked improvement in a couple of weeks. You can force the tree into dormancy if the branches are still green and somewhat flexible. Typically, Maples put on leaves once a year, in the spring as the weather warms. Move your tree to a dark, cool, and dry place. You will still need to provide water. DO NOT OVERWATER! Just enough to keep the roots from drying out. Bring it back out in the spring and everything should be just fine.
