Leadership is the ability to inspire others to do the very best they can to achieve the stated aims of the leader, although those aims will not feel remote to those working so hard to achieve them, they'll feel like their own.

Leadership is about getting people to *want* to follow you, not to drag people along with your way of thinking. It requires patience and understanding from the "leader."

I think this is an excellent question due to the added dimension of the "servanthood". A choice is offered here between leading and servanthood, but I would suggest that both are critical elements of leadership.

On one hand a leader "leads" by example and through clarifying vision for the organization. He or she is able to see far reaching opportuniites for the organization and direct its growth. Combining this visionary ability with a commitment to living by example the values that the organization is to be guided by is a large part of leadership.

In addition, though, a leader is in a way serving his or her employees through creating opportunities for them to maintain and enhance their employment. And a leader serves his or her people well by helping them fulfill their potential. In a way, an inspirational leader models servitude, demonstrating that caring for other people's interests helps everyone in the long run. A great leader is able to set his or her ego aside for the benefit of others.

Interesting question.
