Old Empresario says
The American dreams used to be about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Citizens wanted their own land and property or wanted to make money. After World War II, the basic standard of living sought after by the ordinary citizen was to have a suburban house with a fence and a backyard. Today, the newest dream seems to be national relevance. They all want to be seen and heard.

The American dream used to be the pursuit of your own objectives in your own way, knowing you had the freedom to do it. Now Americans dream of freedom from the ever more crushingly massive burdens of regulation, taxation and debt placed on them by what they nostalgically and fondly still think of as "their" national state.
Angela Kane says

Ana Louis says
I think the american dream is knowing that you can dare to hope. Because freedom and opportunity allows us to pursue better lives - whatever we consider a better life to be. I truly believe that the american dream has always been freedom.
