Would you rather be a well-established writer only to write what others want, or would you rather be a struggling writer, but you got to write anything you wanted?

I want to be a freelance writer. I would rather write for myself but starting out you have to write for others. Most writers have to write what others want before they become successful.

If you are asking would I rather be a writer who is well known, but told by someone else what to write, or an obscure writer, whom no one is aware of, but free to write on whatever topic I choose, then I would have to say that I would choose to be neither. I would always choose to be a writer who writes.

Hmm... a tough question. I like to write my own thing, and if someone gives a constructive argument against it, I'll argue back in a non-harmful manner. I write gaming critiques and I don't care what feedback I get as long as someone isn't going to attack me or my works. Yet I'm surprised how many agree with what I have to say about even the most popular games.

I don't see why you can't do both.
It's hard to make a living at anything. If you write paid assignments for someone else, you can make sure the rent is paid and you have food to eat. You also get opportunities to hone your writing skills.
You can also write for yourself and do anything you want.
Dee aka Nonna says
That is a really tough one. As writers we want to write, pour our thoughts and feelings out on the page and hope that someone, anyone will appreciate what we do. It can be a very lonely business whether you are writing what others want or writing anything you want, even in a writing community like hubpages. Writers who, and that is all of us, really want to make it big, get recognized and get paid handsomely for the effort are always just a prayer away from making it.
Writing what others want is easy....writing anything I want is a struggle.....I, personally, hold back way to often but I think that just might change.
Thank you Phoebe Pike for asking this very important question.

I guess I wouldn't care. As long as I'm writing and learning, then I would write whatever. Which is pretty much why I'm n Hubpages. I'm writing and learning, even though you are restricted a little bit.

All of the thoughts are only recycled thoughts. One really only gets the credit for rearranging those thoughts.
As I love Lego, I will use it as an example. One can build a castle or a yacht or a jetstream 767 or all of them from a whole bunch of the Lego blocks.
It only depends on your imagination..so in this sense, it does not matter if you write for someone else or for your self. To get credit for writing is what you are asking I suppose.
A writer always leaves an imprint of herself or himself in the finished work, much like a Master diamond cutter does, you can almost tell who cut it without looking at the laser imprint, so the only question is do you want your name on it or not...

My writing is whatever I feel like writing. Sometimes I like to do research and write about what I have learned. Other times I just write from personal experiences. I write for fun, not for money. Good question.

Interesting question. Over the years, I have always focused my writing on whatever I wanted to write, whether I received one red cent. If I love what I am writing, in the end it has always been spiritually and financially rewarding. That is truly where my faith comes in.

When I first started writing and trying to break into print, I wrote for a magazine that I had to write exactly in that genre in order to sell my work to them. I accepted that. I wanted to be published! I wanted to build a resume, get paid, see my words on a page, etc. I think that is a very hard question, and I truly understand it. I think that anyone that writes wants validation, albeit money, praise, recognition, therefore, in a sense you're always writing for others.

I like to write about the things that interest me. I'm not in it to make lots of money I just love to write
MMAgearmaster says
what we are writing are actually our thoughts and our style of thinking, and we just convert our thoughts into words and put on our computer screen or on paper. I think its not the professional writing style that will get attention of your readers but the beauty of your thoughts. And writer should never struggle until he is using his own thoughts. Copy paste is nothing because there would be no first hand knowledge. By first hand knowledge, i mean knowledge that you have earned from your experience rather from books. Books give you second hand knowledge because its the knowledge of the author of that book. So what ever your thoughts are write them the way you want and spread your words.

I really wanted to write freely whatever i want to, anything's which i feel at time i want to write but many of the time i will not write just because of that negative thinking that either readers like that or not.

I would rather be as I am, a struggling writer because I get to write my own things. The things I write are my ideas, feelings, and imagination all put into words. Whether they are worth a look by anyone, I am still very proud of everything I write because if it is good or bad it doesn't matter. It is still mine. It is some what of an accomplishment to me.
RJ68 says
The first question is what is your intent as a writer. Do you want to be a successful writer? Second, the object of the writer is to grab the attention of the audience, right?
The writer has to decide that matter.
