The main cause of cramping during a period is that the body is trying to pass a blood clot through the cervix. It is actually contractions you are feeling. This is the equivalent of giving birth -- or worse! (Trust me, I have had periods that were much worse than giving birth, and I've had five kids.)
To avoid painful cramping, which can be felt in the uterus and/or the lower back, I found that the feminine product 'Instead' to be a miracle worker.
'Instead' is a flexible plastic cup that fits inside to catch the blood. It prevents air from getting to the cervix, and therefore decreases clotting. There is a reusable product called 'The Keeper,' that is designed to work in the same manner.
A blood thinner is also helpful, as it slows clotting. Willow bark is a natural blood thinner and pain reliever. To use willow bark, make a tea of it or a tincture.
Some women find relief through exercise, but I only found that helpful when dealing with the other effects of PMS, like bloating and headaches.
