He's had his ups and downs over the years, but I just finished his newest book "11/22/63" a couple of weeks ago and it's his best in a very long time.

Yes, I think he is a very talented writer. He has a gift - so many writers of multiple works end up using the same elements in their stories. His story telling is unique.

No doubt at all. He has an incredible ability to tell a story, to make the reader completely forget reality and immerse him/herself in the world that King has created. Of course, that ability alone isn't enough to catapult someone from 'good' to 'great,' and there are hundreds, even thousands of good writers out there - but it's certainly got to be one of the most important characteristics, doesn't it?

I have only ever read Dolores Claiborne, and I really liked it. It helped that I had already seen the movie and loved Cathy Bates. However, in general I think he's probably a good writer, maybe not great in the sense that he is the next Dickens, but he is definitely at the top of the pop culture charts and based on my good experience with his one book, I would say yes.

Stephen King IS a great writer.

I wish I could crank out best-selling novels and screenplays as rapidly, and as often, as he does.

I agree with SimeyC that he's a great storyteller, but, not a great writer in the classical sense. He has a great imagination which serves him well in the genre he's mastered. I've ready many of his novels and am only 31 pages from finishing the second installment of the Dark Tower Trilogy: The Drawing of the Three, which deftly combines metaphysics and action and suspense in a fast-paced thriller.

I personally prefer writers who make social commentary, such as Dickens, Hawthorne, Orwell and Huxley, but, my absolute favorite is the master of metaphor: Franz Kafka.

Yes! I love his older stuff, I have read some of his new ones like Cell and Blaze (Richard Bachman) but they don't compare to his old ones. I also felt that I lean more towards Richard Bachman books than the Stephen King ones. My favorite stories are: The Long Walk, The Dark Half, and Thinner. I could read those over and over again. They're classics!

I think he is great. His stories are unique and his ability to keep a story moving along. He has had a few hiccups, who would over an entire career? He does seem to be picking it back up with the last few books.

Personally I am unimpressed by Mr. King's writing, which I find formulaic and repetitive.

No Stephen King is not a great writer and even he will agree; he is a brilliant storyteller, much in the way J K Rowling is - their English isn't classic but they have the ability to wind a convincing plot that negates the lack of true great writing - the distinction of being a great storyteller, rather than a great writer is perhaps pedantic, but I feel that great writers should possess superior English such as the true classics (Tolkien, Dickens etc) possess.

It doesn't make then less talented.....
