I would have to agree with SirDent that they would need it also for money to some degree. Even later in their timeline they would use the gold and silver to build Salomon's temple. By that time they should have been prospering to gain more wealth.

Well, it is obvious that the beginning of the book of Ezekiel could be talking about UFOs & aliens, but what does this have to do with gold collecting slaves? I don't know, but if I was an advanced race of beings (or a God of some sort), I'd be making those little bastards work for me, plus, gold is very useful for a lot of things - including electronic devices. For one thing, Egypt owed Israel wages for all those years of slavery they were subjected to. Plus, as has been stated, the gold they received went into the construction of the Tabernacle.

You have actually asked two question instead of just one. The reason the Israelites were to demand gold from the Egyptians was because of the 400 years of slavery. The Israelites were slaves and made to work for the Egyptians and the work load was very demanding. When they left Egypt, they were numbered at 600,000 not including children, (Exo_12:37 And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children.)

As for the reason they needed the gold, I can only speculate. Gold was the currency of choice and was the most valuable element of the time. The Israelites would need gold in order to barter for goods with neighboring nations.
