Hello singleaple! The reason that answers are required to be of a certain length is because the whole point of the questions section on HubPages is to get readers to leave long answers and ultimately, write a Hub article that answers the question in great detail. Anything that requires a brief opinion or short answer should be posted in the forums section of HubPages where there is virtually no length limit to your responses. Yes, it's a joke really when you consider that some of the questions only require a yes or no answer.

Longer answers are likely to be filled with much information, while short answers usually aren't, though sometimes the answer to a question can simply be yes or no.

Oh you can make them very short, just type one word and hit the space bar and let the cursor carry across the box. It is counted as words.....................
