I like the idea of everyone being able to receive health care, cancer treatment, o.b. care, etc regardless of whether they can pay for it or not. BUT I want the CHOICE of keeping my private insurance and CHOOSING which doctors, treatment centers and clinics I go to. I want the CHOICE of saying yes or no to cancer treatment at age 75, regardless if doctors and 'officials' say, "It's no use..you've lived a long life..." Then government benefits won't pay for any treatment. It's MY decision, not the government's, to choose. However, if I CHOOSE to take government paid health benefits and NOT private care, then so be it. I'll get what they WILL ALLOW, as there will possibly be restrictions.

I'm afraid of people who are afraid of government run health care.

As a Canadian who enjoys better over-all health than Americans (this is a fact), and who believes that a basic level of care is a right (based on being a privileged nation), just as basic education is a right. I dunno, maybe you think only some children should receive an education just as only some children should receive medical care?

My understanding of Obama's Universal Health Care plan is that it would not be a 100% public system, but rather a mix of public and private. Why are you afraid of it? But more importantly, why would you deny a basic level of care for all your citizens? Are you afraid of a public education system too?

I'm not American and live in a country that provides a great health and social security cover.

But that doesn't prevent me from thinking to others that have less chance than I have and I'm wondering if all Americans have to subscribe to a health insurance, how will do those that have nothing, that don't have a job? How will they pay for it?

Only after reading this piece of legislation am I afraid of government run health care. In a sense they already control and regulate a great deal of our health care system and that doesn't bother me too much. Now what is being proposed is not good from a care standpoint (requires rationing), from a coverage standpoint (there will still be something like 30M uncovered people by 2015) nor from a cost standpoint (adds ~$1T to an already ballooning debt). So the question is why now and why the rush? Medicare will be out of money in like 2 years. Fix that mess. A mess I will remind everyone that was completely owned and created by the very same government body that wants to 'fix' my health care. I say fix that mess first and show me you know what you are doing then we can talk.

I'm not afraid of it. But I'm not in favor of it. The government screws up a lot. You can't always trust them when it comes to money. I would like the government to stay out of it as much as possible.

It is true that governments can screw things up. But why single out governments? ORGANIZATIONS screw things up: look at GM for example...

Having lived in Canada, the UK, and Germany, I can tell you that people in much of the rest of the world are very confused about why ANY American would PROTEST universal health care.

For us it is like protesting a publicly-run military (perhaps you prefer private contractors instead?), or a publicly-run police force (as opposed, again, to a profit-driven one; whatever that could be), or free education...

There is definitely something very fishy going on, I think, when you hear people mention the word "socialism" in reference to public health care, yet everyone accepts the common sense of non-fee-paying public schools.

What's the difference? You don't have to pay to send your kids to school: why should you have to pay to go to a doctor? Mysterious...

See my hub http://hubpages.com/hub/Is-America-the-Greatest-Co for more on this.

Canadians doen't have health care issues because they're clear and everybody can see whats wrong with them. We need something but I don't think we need a program that has so much potential for abuse. Now lets see if our school system is the benchmark for this discussion. The biggest problem there is the lack of parental involvement which leads the lack of discipline that causes breakdowns in the system that we blame on underpaid teachers. So, if we use that as a comparison we'll have a bunch of ignorant people who will abuse a system meant for everyone to the point that you won't want to go to the doctor and it will be the doctors fault that they are ignorant.

The government doesn't have a good track record for using good common sense. They will find a way to screw it up with they're greed and before you know it they'll make it mandatory for all women to have an abortion so the rest won't have to feel bad about killing someone. We'll all be the same and we'll all be included. Peace.

I hear over and over and over again, the Government will ration your care. Are you from Mars? Do you think that Big Insurance Companies don't ration care? Don't you know that Insurance companies get to approve or disapprove of any treatment your own doctor proposes. Don't you know that they set rules about what hospitals and medical services do and charge. You can keep your insurance for a limited time if you leave your job if you can afford the very high premium, but only because the Government forces it by law. You are being lied to by big business to protect their bloated profits. In the meantime people are dying because they can get no insurance at any cost. I can't believe all you complainers or that rich or that dumb.

A resounding no!

We have been fed the line that "government is the problem" for 37 years (since Ronnie boy was in office) and apparently Madison Ave and their benefactors have made it sell. Given proper resources and sound procedures for carrying it out, a public plan will work. Just as Medicare works.

The hue and cry orginates with the powerful insurance and pharmaceutical lobbies, bolstered by the minority of upper income folks that have policies that they are ok with becuase they can afford them, and currently they do not have to "mingle" with the masses who will be in the same offices waiting for care with them.

There is mass profit in the denial of care that is the method by which these industries profit. For profit healthcare is a disgrace to our nation.

Afraid? Yes indeed. Why? Because the U.S. government bankrupts everything it touches, or controls at the very least. They can barely deliver our mail without putting the postal service millions of dollars in debt. Not to mention our multi-trillion dollar national deficit. Now we want to trust them with health care? If a private organization racked up debt like the government does they'd probably do the smart thing and cut their losses, but the government doesn't. They just throw more money at the problem, after all, it's not theirs. Government-run programs are always incredibly wasteful and substandard to their private sector counterparts.

The insurance companies may be greedy, but at least they're not stupid AND greedy...most of the time.

I am not sure where the word fear comes into play here. We are going to be forced into this program whether we like it or not. Fear does not come from God. I do know this. I also know that alot of the things in the "new plan" are just flat not right....I hope this answers your question....is this like who's afraid of the big bad wolf??? No fear here, just dislke....we are Americans and by the Constitution have rights which are undeniably being taken away one by one....hmmmmmm

Yes! The government needs to stay out of private businesses and the every day lives of the American people. We don't need a dictator telling us what we have to buy or what to buy! We have lost enough freedom as it is! The elections are coming soon, but not fast enough for this American!

I am completely mortified by the thought of government run health care. Look at how successfully they administer all their programs. My dad always said be happy you don't get all the government that you pay for!

Obviously you never read the fine print. You will not be able to keep your individual health plan. If you work, what you have will be thrown out the window in favour for the government run bullshit. If you're special needs or on medicare/medicaid, you'll get restricted coverage. If the government doesn't like what you are going to do with your deceased loved one, they can take over and do what they will with it.

I suggest you look at my hub and find out more little tidbits about the piece of shit health care program.
