I would stop the Ancient Library of Alexandria in Alexandria, Egypt from being destroyed thereby retaining to date all knowledge within its walls.

I think there are so many historical events that qualify as tragedies, it would be very difficult to select just one. I appreciate the hubbers who suggested preventing Hitler from coming to power therby saving millions of lives, preventing 9/11 thereby saving lives and preventing a war, and preventing slavery and all of it's after effects. I especially appreciate the hubber who suggested preventing the fire in Alexandria, very insightful.

I think I would change how the newly formed government of the United States handled the Indians in taking their land and the slaughter of thousands of women and children and men too that were unprovoked and unneccessary. The historic Trail of Tears should never have happened.

Changing history is a difficult proposition which could have incredibly adverse affects on the future (or present rather) as we know it.

For instance, what if Hitler was killed as a child and a more competent military leader arose to take his place. The Third Reich and the Axis powers may have triumphed over the Allies and won WW2. Then what kind of world would we live in?

Given the chance to change the past, I would decline. The human scope is far too limited to perceive the consequences of even the slightest historical change. However, saving the Library of Alexandria is an excellent choice which is often overlooked when questions such as this arise. After all, the retention of lost knowledge could be the most beneficial factor in the advancement of civilization.

The birth of Hitler would be a good place to start.

Undoing the birth of Hitler would accomplish nothing. If he was not in place someone else would have been. Not to mention Brittain declared war on him not the other way around. Maybe undoing the establishment of Israel, and having the Jews of the world assimilate within different countrys, thus eliminating terrorism.
