Coping with people who twist what you say

You can say something that is clearly and specifically about yourself, and they read it that you attacked them, even if it has nothing even remotely to do with them. Besides telling them to jump off a cliff, how do you get these people to read - or listen - to what was actually said, not what they assumed must have been said? I've taken interpersonal communications classes, and still don't know what to do about them. Ideas?

Hang out with people who DON'T think the world revolves around them.

How about trying to confront them. Say, "hey, how did you take what I said and made it about YOU?"

That's what I would do. I can't tolerate people like that..

suggestion... find a new group of people to communicate with. you're obviously surrounded by people who are not meshing with you, and that doesn't take a very educated guess.
