Heaven and Hell, or something else? 79

Is there an Afterlife? Or is there a more useful question to ask?

Heaven and Hell, or something else? The questions we ask are just as important as their answers. Consider: Over the eons, mankind has searched and searched, utilizing all the tools of his wondrous mental... keep reading →

I don't spend a lot of time wondering about it at this stage in my life. I suppose when I was in the "pondering-all-of-life stage" (late teens, early twenties) I had to form some kind of "opinion", and this is the opinion I came to:

Either there is an afterlife or there isn't. If there isn't, then it's really important that we make the most of the life we have on Earth. There's a lot of good we can do while here on Earth, and that can be our legacy. There's a lot of beauty in life, and we should enjoy and appreciate the gift of being able to experience that.

If there is an afterlife, we'll discover it when the time comes. It would seem to make sense to me that if there's "something else" then there's some reason we're here first and then there. Again, spending our time, energies, thoughts, and efforts on life on Earth would seem to make sense. Life is short. I'd think we're supposed to focus on either stage (this one or a later one) when we're in it.

As far as reincarnation goes, I don't believe in it. I believe that each newborn human being comes into this world with a brand new little soul and a "clean slate". That's kind of how life seems to work. The trees don't get recycled leaves each Spring. They get brand new ones. Each wave that forms in the ocean is new, heads toward the shore and breaks. Other new ones are formed. I just don't think Nature would recycle something as fundamental as a soul.

I believe that the answer to this question comes to everyone eventually. We all die some time and when that time comes your beliefs won't matter. What will happen will happen. The only reason humans dwell on the afterlife in the first place is because we are afraid of the unknown. It's why we invented Valhalla, the underworld, heaven, and hell. We have no idea, and it scares the shit out of us. Well, some of us.

I have thought about this many times before. I have read the bible and I have also tossed around the idea of reincarnation. I was very curious when I was younger and actually had books on wicca. I do though believe in God and Heaven and Hell.

Despite all the writings and eons of preachings, it comes down to one knowing within themselves whether or not there is an afterlife. No amount of writing can really prove to another of an afterlife, simply because it must, in the end, become a personal experience to know for sure.

Perhaps the good news is that the majority of people, whether particularly religious or not "feel" that there is an afterlife. I find that listening to our inner selves becomes important in almost all aspects of our lives.

So, yes, I do wonder about the particular details of what an afterlife might be like. I simply have no idea what it might be like. The closest thing we have to compare it to is this life. I only hope that it is far, far grander and more wonderful than this temporary, perishable life.

I have placed my trust and faith in Jesus Christ and the redemption of sins that I have received through His death and resurrection. I trust in Him alone for my salvation and truly believe that I will spend eternity in His presence.
