Having a website is all about traffic so anything that brings clicks to your pages is 'a good thing' or is it?
In reality that is just not true. Give me 15 minutes and I can have thousands of impressions for a particular page but the likelihood of any of those visitors reading the content is close to nil.
Adding a forum to a site is a way of making it 'sticky'. You give visitors a reason to keep coming back in order to read and post in it.
The downside is that it can involve a lot of work both to set up in the first place and to keep running smoothly. It can be worth it for the traffic generating potential though.
(Techie hat on) I love forums because they can provide hours of fun in the more detailed set up
