How to send and receive e-mails from multiple addresses through GMail?

I haven't done this but it seems it's just a matter of putting a plus sign and a term after your name to define the address/folder.
For example, if your address is johnsmith@gmail, your extra mailbox can be
johnsmith+extrabox1@gmail.com
etc...
