Rosa Berger says
Knives and spoons have been around for several ten thousand years, first made of special stone and wood, then of various types of metal.
The first forks in Europe appear in the archaeological record toward the end of the Medival ages, around 1400 or so. These forks were wooden and consisted of two spikes.
As metals become more abundant in Europe, forks were made of various metals, but mainly for the well to do. The poor people remained with wooden forks.
