How to I get my puppy to stop play-biting?

We just adopted an 8-month old, very large Shepherd. He's never been trained so we're starting from scratch. One of his bad habits is being very mouthy, which really hurts with teeth his size. Any tips for helping us to stop this bad behavior are greatly appreciated.

I currently have a 4-month-old malamute who loves to do the same thing. It is a natural "teething" behavior but with a lot of patience, breakable. Every time Griffin begins to bite on my hands or any other body part, I immediately say "kisses" and if he continues with the biting, I say it more firmly to get his attention. The trick is to reward him verbally in a positive (good dog) when he quits doing it and hopefully begins to lick instead of bite. The other key is to have chew toys readily available and avail yourself of passing one of those to him rather than your hand! Always reward them verbally for choosing the right thing rather than continuing the bad behavior. The "kisses" phrase seems to work wonders for Griffin!

First thing you do is you firmly tell it "no"

In training my dogs, and I have had dogs all my life, I have always, not sometimes, but always-kept a rolled up newspaper in my back pocket....when the dog exhibits wrong behavior, slap your hand YOUR HAND not the dog with the newspaper making a loud noise...It will straighten him right up....most dogs do not like the sound of the noise and it gets their attention....I actually recently wrote a hub on bad doggy behavior.. Good luck to you!!!

Act like a hurt puppy in response. Puppies learn "bite inhibition" by the response you provide them when they do bite, whether it is playful or hurtful.

Make a noise just like another puppy would do if bitten - a loud yelp - and remove yourself from the puppy's access. You're not showing the puppy you're afraid of it, you're showing it they won't have the pleasure of your company if they misbehave.

Whatever you do, don't bite back! (kidding, but knew someone who thought that was a good idea - it's NOT!)

How to I get my puppy to stop play-biting

Puppies are fun and playful while they are young. They have very sharp teeth that can cause you pain when they playfully bite at your hand or ankles. This is a result of puppies having new jaws and teeth... keep reading →

This is natural for puppies as they are just starting out in their life sharp teeth and playful abound with energy is all part of being a puppy. My best suggestion is to get some toys so he can bite on some you can put food treats inside. Go along to a pet shop or warehouse and chat with staff about their stock.

I totaly agree with the loud noise method. Also make sure you always follow up the correction by putting one of his chew toys in his mouth and praising him when he takes it. This way he knows he can chew which is natural for a puppy, just not on you!
