I have a friend who got herpes when her father kissed her as a child. At that time he had a cold sore, so yes, herpes can be transmitted from parents to a child.

There are over 40 types of the herpes virus and they are all different. It would really depend on the type.

Yes, through child birth, if the birth happens naturally. The infant can get the herpes virus through the birth canal. And if the virus isn't caught right away it can cause major brain damage. The doctors have to perform spinal taps, mris, and catscans. To make sure there is no brain damage from the virus, over the course of the first sixth months of the child's life. Along with that the infant needs to have an IV, a pic line or a central line, put in to recieve an anti-virus called acyclovir. When the child released to go home from the hospital he/she will have to be put on valtrex and zovirax to help prevent having outbreaks.
