Since Trinidad is an island if you're new to surf then grab a board and try to catch any wave you can. However in the northern part of Trinidad more towards the north eastern part there is a place called Sans Souci that many people rever as the best place to surf. However I grew up in the southern part of the island and being as Trinidad is a country that has a small but dedicated surf following the waves in Mayaro beach we just as good if not better than San Souci.
Though just make sure you are a great swimmer and don't get too frustrated because remember there is always another wave coming so that's one more chance to get it.
If you're really feeling to catch some surf then grab a boat and head over to a place called no mans land it's an island off the coast of Tobago and it will cater to those who are shy about surfing as well as give you a peaceful place to surf.
I hope this answered your question, if not I will do my best to give you the full out details.
Thanks.
