The whole social work field depends on a productive, prosperous economy. That is because the FUNDS to pay all the social workers and their "clientele" have to be extracted (taxed) from the productive elements of society.

Now, as this society continues to decline in wealth

there are going to be more problems "funding" those programs, and more political warfare over them.

If you think getting into that the social welfare field is going to be a comfortable way of earning a living and getting a generous government pension, consider this:

YOU DON'T GET "FIRST WORLD AMENITIES" IN A THIRD-WORLD NATION (which the U.S. is becoming).

Social Work can be a great career move if you have a penchant for giving back or making sure that things are done to a satisfarctory degree. There are many different areas of focus when it comes to social work but, the common goal is the same. Social workers are the medium between getting things done.

In school social workers are the ones who counsel and mend the home life and school life of students. They can also step in in cases of abuse or neglligence and arrange foster care. They are there to ensure that mentally a child can advance in their studies no matter what home life can entail. If the home life is interfering they step in and try to figure out what can be done for the welfare of the child. If that means home visits or family mediation they take on the job.

Medical social workers are the people who work with patients with chronical and mild to terminal ilnesses. They do everything from making sure they have proper insurance to some instances arranging hospices or live-in care. The can also arrange for couseling for patient and family and for meals if the patient is alone.

Public Health social workers work for hospitals, offices, care facilities and the local government agencies. The arrange health care and in some cases financial benefits for families and individuals.

There are many areas a Social Worker can apply their knowledge. I just touched on the 3 major areas of focus most social workers take. They can also work with mental health and drug abuse or become policy makers or planner or develop programs to deal with common social issues in the community or world. If the individual contemplating this field belives in giving back to the community, helping others in their time of need, making a difference and taking on a job not many people want. Than being a social worker is not only the great career move but it is the only.
