Most people use social networks to get traffic to their site so that they can sell them a clickbank ebook or physical product such as amazon affiliates.
Most experienced marketers use a capture page to build a list of subscribers that they can introduce promotional products to with a newsletter, this works well for long term residual income.

@research analyst I would say that is partial correct driving traffic is just part of internet marketing. What matters the most to internet marketers is conversion. Driviing quality and therefore quantifiable traffic and have them convert is the holy grail.
As an analyst myself I can provide equations, theoritical gooble-gook that only makes sense to us. What matters to the owner is really a yes or no.
