There are lots of reasons for needing a family lawyer. Family law deals with issues such as; marriage, civil unions, and domestic partnerships. It can also include; spousal abuse, adoption, surrogacy, child abuse, and child abduction. There are many other matters handled by family court, for example, property settlements, and much more.

Probably the most common (and unfortunate) reasons are divorce and child custody. Child custody, or guardianship, is an arrangement made to put the child in the care of the parent, and in some cases, another family member or person who can care for the child. Visitation rights are usually given to the non-custodial parent, or any other significant person that child may have in his/her life.

A restraining order is another matter that is dealt with in family court. It is a legal document used to protect one individual from another, whether it be protection from abuse, harassment, or stalking.

Emancipation of a minor is also handled in family court. This is when a minor child is freed from control by their parents or legal guardian, leaving the parent or guardian with no rights to the minor. In most cases a minor becomes emancipated to get married or to enlist in the army, both of which need parental consent, or an order from a judge.

These are just a few of the many reasons to need a family lawyer.
