That is perhaps the best known and well recognized animes of all times. The art, the editing, style, and story line are mind blowing.

Perfect-blue (generally I like my anime with plenty of robots, demons, swords, etc... and perfect-blue has none of these, it is what is known as a suspence thriller, but the animation is superb, the plot is facinating, and the characters are endearing. I don't think it is the 'best' per-say, but it is one that everyone should see.
Another that everyone should see is the series 'Patlabor; mobile-police'. There are in-fact Patlabor movies too (two of them that I am aware of) but I would recomend one see at least a few episodes first. Patlabor has plenty of big robots, great story-lines that are sometimes serious & intense and other times light-hearted & funny, it also has some of the best characters in Anime. My only critisizm is the animation which is not bad but inconsistant.

Cowboy Bebop is the best Anime I've ever seen. It has possibly the best scoring I've ever heard on television as well, by Yoko Kanno. Even the dub actors are fantastic. Highly, Highly recommend. Also, I've suffered through many bootlegs of the series on DVD, but a new official one was just released through amazon and it's on netflix. It's in the mail and I can't wait.

Well one of the best anime I have ever viewed was not a movie but a series called Welcome to the NHK.
A humorous story about a young man turned agoraphobic and the girl who lives up the hill from him. They strike up a symbiotic relationship that leads to love. A sad yet humorous story in how they try to cure his agoraphobia.

well asked from most people they would say the naruto series but i recently came across another one which i really preffer because of its compelling story line and maturity in storytelling as well as its flow. its called full metal alchemist its 51 epsodes and has really grabbed my attention lately. also another that i like is slam dunk
