I'm not sure if it does or not, as I've never looked for actual data on it. I'll say this, I've not lived one day on this earth without a pet, and I am very stable.
Pets, especially dogs, are great for people who need to feel loved because they are always happy to see you. Cats are a little different as they can be aloof, but cats really are great also. A household with both cats and dogs is never dull.
Fish and reptiles are two other types I've kept, but you don't really have any kind of mental connection. At least I haven't, but they are fun to watch sometimes.
