Is it helpful to your hub score to write a couple non-commercial hubs?

No, the Hubtype doesn't effect the score. Aka, the only way "content" changes your score is if it is duplicated. The words themselves can say anything and Hubscore isn't set off it.

It would depend on how you define non-commercial. My hubs are largely book review, with links to various sites for people to buy the related item. I don't think they are very commercial though. That's more a by product of the book review nature of them.

I don't know that you would really want to make your hubs overly-personal though. I think the idea the site is going for are topics that other people can find useful, and personal stories are nice, fun, but not necessarily useful.
