There are so many men and women who make this list but William Tecumseh Sherman has to be at the top. His march south through Atlanta to the sea was both controversial and astonishing. He swept through Georgia with little resistance and delivered Savannah to the president as his Christmas present. Contrary to Southern myth and belief, Sherman did not burn everything in his path, he did not rape and molest the women, and he ordered his troops to take only those provisions they needed to sustain themselves (Sherman was so well respected by his soldiers they obeyed his every order!).

Nathan Bedford Forest was probably among the front runners. He was called "The Devil Forest" by Ulysses S. Grant and a reward was put on his head for his dead or alive capture. Even at the end of the war in Alabama when he was corned from all sides did he escape by jumping his troops horses over the Union lines. He was also the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan when its purpose was to fight for southerners against the carpet baggers. He resigned when it became evident it was heading more toward racial violence. Nathan was poorly educated and yet considered a genius of calvary tactics by both the Confederacy and the Union.
