I cheated a little bit because they're all a series of books, but I reckon that's a pretty genre defining bunch!

To be honest I'm not much of a reader, but a huge fan of epic sci-fi movies. If you are trully interested in sci-fi books I would stick with the classics, say Tolien's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, or even the Narnia series and even Harry Potter. They are great works from great minds of the past, present, and future. Also, video games are big in the world now and with those, books are written. There are great books to go along with Halo and Mass Effect.
