1. Your teacher should be fluent in the language you want to learn.
2. Practice speaking with others fluent in the language you're learning.
3. Memorise pronounciation & sentence structures (they're not always the same as your own language).
4. Practice your writing (learn the correct flow of pen strokes if the language isn't written in the same charactors as your own.
5. Find opportunities to use your skills so that you gain confidence in using your new language.

I don't really have five tips, but I liked the Rosetta Stone software. It helped me learn enough German to get by before my recent trip to Dresden.
