Why can't cars wait to turn until AFTER I finish crossing the intersection?

Whether turning left or right, most drivers that I've encountered in this city seem unwilling to wait the 10 seconds or more that I need in order to cross from one side of the street to the other. More often, I find that drivers are willing to nearly run me over or cut me off as I make my way, legally, across the road. Living in Victoria, drivers were more than conciliatory, even stopping in the middle of the street to allow jaw-walkers (and there were many) cross the road. Who do these people think they are, trying to kill me?

Denver falls into the category of places where the drivers won't kill you, but they will remind you you'd better hurry. I almost got hit by a bus driver one day who wasn't even paying attention before he turned illegally on a red light. They he's yelling at me! Everyone assumes they are in the biggest rush to get where ever it is they need to go. I've learned to assume two things: 1) They aren't ever watching out for me. 2) They carry enough insurance that if they hit me, I'll be paying off my credit cards quickly.

Be safe.
