I couldn't pass by this question without stopping and writing something down. Poetry has been in my blood for my entire life and not a day goes by without some manner of verse being formed and put on paper. I keep a notebook handy in my car and in my desk that I scribble down pieces of verse that I collect.
The purpose can be as trivial as charlotte's relative in my window spinning some masterpiece in silk or a tragedy in words born from a twist of vocabulary. some verses fall onto the page as a result of some deep dark agony but it doesn't have to be that dramatic. And don't worry about the rhyming, not all poetry does. The importance comes in the expression of YOU.
Poetry is an artform and if there is any level of skill within you, don't squander the talent; express yourself. I have notebooks full of poems of all genres stuffed into filing cabinets and desk drawers. Thus my wife refers me to as a pack-rat poet and she decorates the walls in our home with some of them.
One thing to keep in mind is that not everyone will "get it". Many times there have been readers who didn't like what I wrote while others have fought back emotions after reading the same poem. Never rely on every person who picks up your writing to be complimentary and welcome the criticism. One thing I always keep in mind is the need for reaction: good or bad. Without any response means you did not stir any interest from the reader. to me that is the worst thing.
I have had a book of short stories published and have had all manner of reactions. since there was some sort of reaction, then at least those people read my stories. As a "want-to-be" wordsmith, it can not be about money...its that reaction that brings an heir of confidence that my expression was heard by them.
Poetry? always write it down because if you wait, the angle will change and the meaning can shift to something totally different than the original idea. that tainted angle may be better but without holding the words in place on a page, they can slip away like summer breeze.
The World of Writing is Your Escape
My life was a hard, dysfunctional, sad and lonely, life full of much Pain. Writing was My only escape. It let me release the anger and Pain that I was feeling and that was being inflicted onto paper. Music... keep reading →

There are many benefits in writing poetry.
1) It helps you to collect your thoughts.
2) It helps you to express what you might be feeling inside.
3) It is a way to use words specifically or generally.
4) It allows you to write about a subject that someone else maybe be interested in but doesn't know how to express it themselves.
5) It allows you to experiment writing something in many different ways.
6) Some poetic styles have word limits, or stanza that don't change.
No, I am not going to write a hub. I just thought I would answer the question.

A poetry hub is a great idea....Poetry is the purest are form, I think, because it can only function as a gift of perception. Even commercial poetry doesn't have value without that 'secret smile' of awareness you get when the power of a poem hits you.
Thanks to movable type, it's the one art form that is definitively free, and the appreciation that it gives you when the connection works is incalculable.
One more thing -EVERYONE has at least one good poem in them. They say that about one good book, but a poem may be the one thing everyone can finish at least once.
