Hopefully you are still considering getting a dog, in which case consider the following:
Sit down and discuss as a family what you want the dog for. Companionship, loyalty, protection, little dog, big dog... and so on.
Then I would contact a local vet and tell them what qualities you are looking for. They should be able to tell you what breed will be the best for your family. Also check with your local animal shelter. There are a lot of perfectly good dogs looking for a home and family and you won't have to pay hundreds of dollars for one. Plus you can feel good about saving the pups life.
Good luck.
