Why do some people think marriage 'cures' paedophilia?Are married people immune?

There are two kinds of sex offenders--fixated and regressed. The pedophile falls under the fixated category and is literally fixated on children with respect to sexual arousal. There does not appear, at this time, to be any good way to alter that. The regressed offender is someone who is attracted to age-appropriate people, but may "regress" developmentally at a time of extreme stress. Those folks, through treatment, can get back "on track." Parents United is a program that works with regressed offenders. In terms of priests, I do not think that all the priests who acted out are pedophiles. Some are, but in the past, training for the priesthood was not conducive to developing psychosexually and perhaps not even socially. I think many of the priests who acted out were immature and naive psychosexually. That is not to minimize the gravity of the whole mess nor to suggest that they did not know what they were doing or that they were retarded or anything else. The same "phenomenon" occurs in intrafamilial sex abuse (incest) which is much more pervasive than anyone wants to acknowledge,

Yes Denno66,I agree with you -'bad idea...',but it is not so easy to diagnose the condition !I know now there are far greater strides made in the efforts to assess suitability for the life of a priest by psychologists etc,.

It does really fascinate me though, that so many people think marriage is the answer-it is a fact that most child sexual abuse takes place 'close to home' i.e. a family member or close 'friend'.

That condition is like Homosexuality in the context that, if it is within you, no outside veneer will change it. I'm not talking ill of Gays and Lesbians, understand, but there are those that believe that you can cure a Homosexual by getting them to commit to a Heterosexual relationship. Pedophilia deserves no excuse, however, it cannot be cured either. Bad idea to allow pedophiles to be priests. Period.
