A major reason is the image resolution, Blu-Ray has more than twice the resolution which gives an excellent image definition, the sound is also a big difference for the better, say that Blu-Ray is light years ahead of the DVD ..

Blu-Ray has a lot more capacity than a simple DVD. This means that you can store a lot more data in a single disk. This greatly helps if you like to watch movies or any videos in High definition. The picture and sound quality you get is very good.

I think increased capacity is the primary reason to buy Blu Ray over DVD. Blu Ray disks can store around 25GB (or 50GB Dual Layer) whereas DVD is at 4.7GB (or 8.5GB Dual Layer).
Also with the advent of HD format, movies typically take up a lot more space on a disk than they used to and standard 4.7GB DVD will not suffice.
Another aspect of Blu Ray that I like is that the Blu Ray drives are backward compatable and will play all your DVD's, but beware of distributing any material on Blu Ray disks and ensure your recipient has a Blu Ray player as DVD players cannot play Blu Ray disks!
