Revenue is earned from Youtube by having a well viewed video channel to start off with and then you enroll onto the youtube partner program which in effect is just earning from the ads within the videos and on the channel page you have control over, it's best to test and really focus on creating a channel that will go viral all over the internet like Shane dawsons or freds channels, something entertaining always works, but quite how you are going to earn again is all down to how well you write your videos meta data!

Some people use videos as a method to drive traffic to a landing page (i.e. a website or blog) while other people with really popular channels are Youtube partners and make money via the ads shown on their videos and what not. I don't know if you have to apply to be a partner or if Youtube contacts you. In order to become a partner and stuff, though, I do know that you have to get a lot of views and have quite a large following, which means you have to consistently put out high-quality stuff that people are interested in.
