How do you cut down your shopping expenses? What tips can you provide for a spendthrift like me who can not control the urge to shopping?

I hope you've been able to "Control the urge"! Realizing that you are being led by some very devious methods. Stay out of the stores and quit reading the ads that come in the mail. Years ago I too, was a shop-a-holic and it was ruining my plans and dreams. Then I realized what a schmuck I was being. I was just giving in to all those advertisers and following their direction. I never open a sale flier anymore and rarely read magazines unless I'm in a waiting room. I only go to malls about once a year unless it's to run in an anchor store or one specific store for something explicit. I only go to big box discount stores once a quarter. When I realized how many of us go to a store for specific items with the intent to save $2. on that item but wind up spending $50 or $100 more than we intended, you begin to realize the implications of advertising. If you pay attention to what those around you are talking about and saying, it's easy to keep up with the fashion and the sale info that is necessary. From experience you already know the best places to shop for particular items - use the knowledge and go there when the need arises. The one thing I have allowed myself to get back into is grocery ads since the savings can be significant. Shopping for me is a way to unwind after a difficult day but I've found that grocery shopping can be just a rewarding - especially if you make it count when you go.
