Marturion says
Thornton Wilder, one of the most understated and under-read American novelists of the 20th Century, wrote beautifully compelling stories about self-discovery and realization under bizarre and surreal circumstances. To date, my favorite book of his is The Eighth Day. This is an experimental piece, in which Wilder proposed that a story can be told by ignoring plot and focusing entirely on characterization. The result is a tremendous read, and I recommend it to, well, everyone.
