Pere-Lachaise Cemetery, without a doubt. See all the bizarre, ornate graves of famous people from throughout history, including Balzac, Gertrude Stein, Chopin, Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf, Colette, Eugene Delacroix, Richard Wright and Isadora Duncan (in the columbarium), Marcel Proust, and of course, Jim Morrison. Wear comfortable shoes (it's hilly), get a map before you go in, and spend a sunny afternoon wandering through the cemetery hunting down the graves of people you want to see. Don't miss the poignant memorials to the Jews who were deported to concentration camps during World War II.

To get an idea of the history of Paris it's good to visit the Musee Carnavalet in the Marais district. You can read about it and see photos and links for this museum at my website http://www.jeffersoninparis.com. I get the most out of seeing sites after I've read something about their history or if, after seeing them, I sit down and read a brochure about their history. Right near the Louvre, for example is the Palais Royal, which was the seat of the Orleans faction of the royal family which often conspired to topple the Bourbon kings. In the 1780s it was turned into the wildest market, bazaar, club scene and pickup place in all Paris. Of course, this ended with the Revolution. Today it is occupied in part by the Ministry of Culture. The Palais du Justice, across from Notre Dame has a long history, also, because the law courts were the main counterweight to the King's powers before the Revolution. We tend to think of kings such as Louis XIV as all powerful,, but they were really given a lot of grief by the top law court in Paris called the Parlement of Paris.
