What is the BEST FREE computer program for making a database?

In my opinion, and based on experience with database programs for both mainframe and personal computers, their is really only one database that I can recommend.

My recommendation is Filemaker, which is available for Mac or Windows systems. It may also be available for other OS but I am not sure about this.

For over 15 years Filemaker was the leading database program for personal computers, based on sales and user preference. The primary reason for this was the following things.

1. Filemaker is a relational database.

2. Filemaker is both table and graphically oriented.

3. There is almost no type of database you could not make.

4. The only limitation on Filemaker is your imagination.

5. Most importantly Filemaker is self repairing at several levels.

Point number 5 is THE point that wins my recommendation. In over 20 years using Filemaker I have NEVER lost one single file of data from any database. This despite working in third world countries where the electrical power frequently would drop out. So even in the middle of a save or update procedure, when the power dropped, Filemaker was able to self recover without the loss of any data.

As far as I know there is no other database program for personaly computers that would be brave enough to make that claim.
