Now that so much progress has been made in regard to equal treatment under the law for men and women, why are men still paying more for auto insurance?

Because they are the ones with the fancier and better cars and they are the ones with atrocious driving records! They are the ones on the road everyday and more apt to get tickets which drives up insurance costs.

The wife probably has a clunker that barely gets the kids the school!

Its very simple really, insurance companies evaluate their quotes on surveys on driving risk, the higher the risk the dearer the quote. Women drivers just happen to be a lower risk than men.

I would imagine it's statistics... How accurate they are (remember not all crashes are reported to the insurance companies), nor whether they take into account the whole story, although the police are pretty good at that now or whether they take into account statistics within statistics (e.g. there are more male drivers than female drivers ergo a higher number of men in crashes) is probably debatable. After all, if you can sell insurance to women at normal prices and insurance to men at higher prices, you make extra profit however slim the reason for it.

Interesting though... taking sexism out of it and going to statistics... women are literally infinitely more likely than men to get pregnant, pregnancy cost the company whom the mother works for when they are on maternity leave so... statistically men are safer bets for employment on that score.... this of course is only my opinion.

Men still outdistances women in pay making about 30 to 40 cents more on the dollar than women.

Women still do not enjoy full and equal treatment under the law even after the passage of the Lily Ledbetter Act of 2009 signed into law by President Obama. The law said that women had the legal right to get paid the same pay as men. Imagine civil rights of women still being written in 2009.

For no purpose other than informational, women were not counted on the US population Census until 1850. Of course, you know that women did not get the right to vote until the 1920's.

About the auto insurance, I suppose that generalizations are made about male drivers and teenage drivers having the propensity to speed more so than women. This may be one of the reasons that men pay higher insurance premiums than men. This is a generalization and is only my opinion.

The wage difference between men and the insurance rates are independent variables of each other and should not be used in comparison to explaim diffierence in auto insurance premiums.

Insurance companies employ people called actuaries which look at the statistics of the number of claims made. Women ARE safer dreivers than men and have less accidents and claims. Women can get specialist car insurance specifically designed for their needs from UK online car insurance supermarkets such as http://www.car-insurance.tv - unfortunately men will have to pay the price for the careless driving of the younger of the species!
