The best for caring a bonsai plant is to feed a fertilizer which is less in nitrogen so as to prevent its excessive foliage growth. For protecting it from the insects you can use the chemicals which you are using for indoor plants.
Always choose a very shallow pot so as to prvent long growing roots. From time to time you can repot it, while you repot trim hard and big roots but keep the small and fine roots as they feed the plant.
