I would appreciate a comprehensive list of all the basic things that a new mother leaving the hospital would need for her infant, through two month old.

I think the previous answers are pretty comprehensive. I would say though that it's a great idea to have lots of liquid in the house if you are breastfeeding as I way always thirsty.
A couple of lasagnes (or similar) that you can pop in the oven is handy as you will be exhausted and probably won't feel like preparing anything. I was lucky, my mother-in-law brought some over the day I left the hospital.
Also for a newborn some kimono wrap style sleepsuits and vests make changing time so much less stressful.
