House painting pays well. Handyman work also does well. There are lots of vacant and rental houses around which offer an opportunity in both of these areas.

I´ve just started a high pressure water cleaning business in Sweden and its remarkeble how much job there is. Just buy the right equipment, put an ad in the newspaper and you are in business! Suggest before you do anything, do a viability check:

1. The "home gardening and odd jobs" business can generate a quite respectable income, but make sure you know you're working in a market which can sustain your business.

2. Check for competition, all local businesses in the same field. Also check out the local ads, see what sort of rates and services are being offered. If you find you're competing with established businesses, offer other services and competitive rates.

(The good news is you might get the market to yourself. If so, you're on a winner.)

3. Look out for overheads. Some businesses cost more than they're worth.

4. Don't get caught by tax issues or records problems, whatever else you do. "Cash businesses" only exist in theory. These bureaucratic nuisances can sabotage a good business, and for a struggling business, they're an insult added to a problem
