There was a poll done recently throughout the RPG Bloggers Network. In general, you have a lot of old-school gamers there so this list may be a little biased towards older games. However, it is a solid list regarding the best pen-and-paper roleplaying games ever made.

- Basic/Original D&D

- Call of Cthulhu

- Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, 1st Edition

- Traveller (Classic)

- Star Wars (West End Games/d6)

- Dungeons & Dragons 3.0/3.5

- GURPS 3e

- Tunnels & Trolls

- Champions

- RuneQuest (majority of 85% favored 2nd Edition)

- Vampire: the Masquerade

- Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, 2nd Edition

- Gamma World (1st/2nd Editions)

- Shadowrun 3e

- Pendragon (Chaosium editions)

- Warhammer Fantasy Role Playing 1st Edition

- Marvel Super Heroes (FASERIP)

- Savage Worlds

- Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition

- Amber

- Rifts

- Hackmaster

- Middle-earth Role Playing (MERP)

- Star Frontiers

- Risus

My personal list differed slightly. In my own Top 25 I included only games that I had played before. Although my list is different than this one, I fully agree with many of the choices on this it.
