They are for sure beneficial more so if you have a website you wish to earn money from. Some sites just like Hub Pages even share revenue from the ads placed on whatever you post. Social networking sites are a way to get a lot of targeted traffic (visitors geared specifically to whatever your website is about) to your website for free though back-linking to your related website or blog.
It can be considered overrated if what you post on these social networking sites are about random mess that people are not demanding info for or if they don't relate in anyway to your website.
