CREATE an ENGLISH GARDEN WEDDING
The very words, “English Garden” conjures up visions of green lawns, trellises covered with cabbage roses and ivy, iron benches tucked into mossy alcoves, baskets of gorgeous flowers and cobblestone patios.
Well, that’s a bit flowery, but finding a pretty setting is certainly a beginning to creating your own English Garden Wedding. An arbor or arch would be nice under which you can stand as you take your vows with fragrant roses and delicate ivy surrounding you.
One bride found some antique metal folding chairs and used those to place large cement urns spilling over with peonies and roses.
A little pond or lake already in bloom makes a great background or perhaps you own yard will help create the theme.
Flowers should be open, mixed and lush nestled in white iron baskets, clustered onto little baskets, peeking out from every corner of your setting. Bridal bouquets can be any combination of blooms, such as hydrangea, big open roses, trailing ivy, poppies, lavender, bluebells, bachelor's buttons, dahlias and peonies.Touches of pretty berries, thistles and violas will distinguish your flower arrangements. Stone containers such as this big frog brimming with flowers and placed around the perimeter will add color and whimsy to your setting. In the spring you may find a setting with blooming cherry blossoms or some other flowering tree. Place your wedding arch in front of it using the flowering blossoms as your background. If flowering trees are not in your setting you can order big branches of flowers from your florist and place them in large urns with water.
Your tables can feature bowls of roses and peonies with mini ivy spilling onto the table. Leave a few rose petals on the table surrounding the centerpieces and scatter roses petals around your cake.
Nurseries are a good source for big containers of ivy and fern, which you can hang in bare spots or place around the yard or patio.
It’s a good idea to visit the venue the year prior to your event. Take pictures, measure and get an accurate feel for what is in bloom and the areas that need enhancement. Make a large chart drawn to scale of the ceremony area much like a room floor plan. Attach your color photos of the areas to your chart and plan the entire color scheme. Keep your most massive flower display close to the wedding arch to create a focal point.
Also decide the location of your guest chairs, the wedding arch and every urn and pot of flowers. Plan your aisle and where you will walk on your way to the altar. This careful planning will payoff on your wedding day.
There are rentals for everything you will need from iron benches to the altar. Once you have designed your ceremony area you can reserve the props you will need. Rushing in at zero hour with a few containers of flowers usually doesn’t work but careful planning will give you the gorgeous setting you desire.
