A to Z of Love Quotes

"Everyone admits that love is wonderful and necessary, yet no one agrees on just what it is." - Unknown

Love - the inexplicable feeling that has puzzled humans for ages - to put it mildly, is complicated. While scientists are trying to understand the biological causes of the feelings we call love, others are trying to define it in words.

Scientists will try to explain love as chemical reactions that stimulate the neurons in our brains and the cells in our bodies, leading to the feelings we associate with love.

Poets, song-writers, and philosophers attempt to give reason to the feelings that unite people together in the closest of bonds. Dictionaries give varying definitions:

  • A deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude toward a person, such as that arising from kinship, recognition of attractive qualities, or a sense of underlying oneness.
  • A feeling of intense desire and attraction toward a person with whom one is disposed to make a pair; the emotion of sex and romance.

However you try to define love, in the end it can only be defined by our actions. Love without actions is not true love. This can be summed up by a quote by Kim Casali, “Love is the little things we do for each other.” This reflects the scripture “let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth”. ( I John 3:18). Your love for someone will be demonstrated by the things that you do for them; things that you do not because you have to, but because you want to, to make their pleasure your aim, and not a means of promoting your own or for some good to yourself, or reward, that may result from it.

There are many blogs and websites listing love quotes but it is hard to find one that is in any way extensive. I have attempted to compile a very comprehensive (but I am sure not exhaustive) list of quotes about love. They are arranged in alphabetical order under a number of headings:

  1. Expressions of Love – these are quotes that are spoken directly from one person to another.
  2. How We Should Give Our Love – this is what it says on the tin, quotes about how to go about giving your love to your beloved.

  3. Symptoms or Consequences of Love – the effect that being in love will have on you.

  4. General & Romantic Love Quotes –these are quotes that I have not categorised but is the most extensive section.

  5. When Love Ends… - for many reasons relationships break up. This quotes reflect how we may feel on such an occasion.

  6. And Without Love? - How do we cope without being loved? These quotes are the authors thoughts of what it is like not to be loved or to love.

  7. Humorous Love Quotes - a light-hearted (but not without a hint of truth) look at love.

  8. Cynical Quotes about Love. - a cynical view of relationships.

  9. The Kiss - a kiss is much more than the joining of ones lips with another.

I hope you enjoy the list and if you make it to the end and you have enjoyed it please leave a comment. If you have any other favourites that I have missed out please add them via the comments section for others to enjoy.
